The Need For A Third Party

While eating dinner I had a chance to do some thinking. Here are some of my thoughts, just me doing some day dreaming but I would love to hear some opinions on this.

Both the Democratic and Republican Parties are broken, ruined by partisan politics taken to either extreme. Left and right, liberal and conservative, the nation is being ripped apart by never ending cultural warfare. Now is the time for a new way, a third party, which could act as a check on both parties. Democrats and Republicans could both benefit from increased competition and it would drive all parties to work harder to be a voice for the people and not special interests.

This third party would be free to take the best aspects of both Democratic and Republican policies. Both fiscally responsible and socially tolerant, we would finally have a party that would bring together: the working class, Hispanics, African Americans, women, LGBT, and everyone else disenfranchised by the current system. Striving for truly universal health care, increased education, and green policies, this party would understand the benefits of investing in our future and our children.

With ever an eye towards the future, this Future Party of America would lay the foundation for our kids to have country and world worth inheriting. Living in an increasingly globalized world, this party would not be afraid to engage our neighbors and work towards an equitable solution to the many scourges we face together.

Achieving these worthy goals would require an immense amount of change and to help us get there we need a strong and experienced leader. Hillary Clinton's unique background, extensive skills and unyielding commitment to these ideals make her a prime candidate to lead the party.

Change could begin now, and the 18 million voters who stood behind Hillary know it. With her at the mantel, our new party would quickly begin to coalesce by recruiting new members and leaders and by hashing out our message for 2010. I myself would rush to join this party and I could see millions of others doing the same. As soon as 2010, our first new representatives would be entering office across the country and by 2012 we might see our first candidates for president from this party, maybe even Hillary Clinton herself.

Just a thought...

I absolutely love the idea. My daughter and I have been talking about the same thing for a couple of weeks now. I will never again be a committed member to either of the two parties again but I would love a new party built from the best of both parties while throwing out the worst of both parties.

GO THERE AND VOTE FOR HILLARY FOR INDEPENDANT

Anonymous said...

I completely agree with this site and sarnold51. These elections are more disgraceful every 4 years, and more people feel misrepresented and truly betrayed by these major parties and their pandering to real principles. I remember in 2000 I belonged to the Greens but joined the Dems after I felt that being an Independent would only make me a spoiler forever. I always felt I was selling my vote short, going with a more powerful party in order to get some of the things I believed in more recognized and protected in this country. Now I will just go back to my own little voice in this very big room called the U.S., and vote according to my judgement and principles, and teach my daughters to do just the same, rather than fold to a misguided, powerful majority that wishes I'd be quiet and tow the line. Good Luck to all of us!

Please God, PLEASE....

Give Hillary the strength and courage to go for it!

The Dems are horrible and don't deserve the Clintons.

Let the Moderate Party BEGIN!!!!!!!

Yes, She Can!

I have been a Clinton supporter since she entered the race and will continue to support her. This country has been cheated and deprived of having the president we need because Dems had a racial agenda. I do not want to belong to this party anymore and would love to see a new 3rd party emerge. And yes, 18 million in this party would not be a bad start. I have friends and family also agreeing on this.

Anonymous said...

I totally agree with the other posters. It just makes me sick that the popular vote doesn't count anymore. It's very discouraging to never have your voice heard. If Hillary doesn't run for the 3rd party, then I chose not to vote. I just don't like either of our choices, unless...Hillary is VP.

IF OBAMA DOES'NT CHOSE HILLARY AS A RUNNING MATE THEN I'M NOT VOTING THIS YEAR. I WOULD NEVER VOTE FOR A REPUBLI"CON" SO I'M JUST GOING TO SIT THIS ONE OUT. I THINK ALOT OF PEOPLE FEEL THIS WAY SO IF McCAIN WINS THEN AMERICA GETS WHAT IT DESERVES:/

I think this is a GREAT idea. I have been disheartened and disillusioned by the Democratic Party for some time now, but tried to stay as positive about it as I could. This campaigned crystallized for me just how much sexism is rampant ... can you imagine what would have happened if the racial version of the constant pejorative and downright mean characterizations of Hillary had been tossed at Barack? And why have there been no impeachment initiatives put forth by the Dems? I'm sick of it and them. I'll be voting for Hillary in November, whether it is as the VP candidate or as a write in.

I don't even have to say anything...it seems we all feel the same, we need this to get our country back together a third party with the best ideas from both parties would def. be the best idea so who do we contact to get this rolling? someone post some links or e-mails

I think this is a great idea. I have been a registered independent for some time now and feel that both of our current parties have failed the "AMERICAN" people. Meaning "ALL AMERICANS" Hillary Clinton has 18 million and counting supporters that could easily help her take the white house as soon as 2008 as Independent though. A party that I feel best represents the interests of ALL AMERICANS: rich, poor, black, white, hispanic, young ,old, glbt, etc. Please keep fighting for Hillary Clinton! If she were to run as an Independent I still think she can take the white house...

yes i had had the same idea both parties have their goods and bads but if combine them into one you have perfection

I always worry an Independent couldn't win a major election but if she came up with a new party, the moderate party, b/c she is a moderate candidate and that is why I support her. Could she start a new moderate party, says more than just being an independent.

Yes, no, maybe so....
I think the big picture is we can't agree on our own democracy.
Funny how we push democracy all over the world yet we can't even be happy in our own place. Third party sounds good-but to be honest, what washington needs is to put the common man back in office. Our Goverment is not representative of the people any longer. With all due respect: this country's regulation is that of a New Hollond..."vote for me"

Anonymous said...

nice work, however "a lot" is TWO WORDS.

Anonymous said...

Go Independant so I can actually vote this year. I WILL NOT vote for Obama he is unpatriotic and we don't need a racist 1st lady in office. I will NOT vote for McCain, no way I will put a republican in office. We already know you would beat McCain, and would have beat Obama but the delegates robbed you of that right. If you are not on the ballot, I won't vote!!!!!!!!

Go for it! We could create a neutral third party. One that does not legislate against one group or the other. A Party that separates religion from politics (I have my religious views too, but prefer not to force them on other people.) A party that votes to take care of our own nation first, then help those who are suffering elsewhere, but go to war only as a defensive act...no more violence for the sake of spreading Democracy to those who do not truly want it.We need to be a neutral party that everyone can feel comfortable voting for. We also need to work on at least two other things..."Fair Tax Act" and doing away with the electoral system as we know it. I feel perhaps we could compromise on that topic and keep electors, but give each state additional electors who are locked into voting as their state's popular vote dictated. Too many times they go behind the screen and supposedly vote their conscience (their own personal preference based on political influences and money)but we need the people to be heard, as well! The electoral college was good back in the days when education, communication and travel were sparse. American citizens are more aware of their environment now than ever before. We should have our voices heard! When we "count noses", Hillary won. Many Republicans switched parties for her sake (this was no "Operation Chaos" thing.)

This has got to be one of the most amazing ideas I have heard since "Hillary Clinton is running for president."

it's hard to not be sad about hillary stepping out of he race, but the thought of her running as an independant or atleast for president in 2012, gives me some hope for our country. i am a huge hillary supporter in whatever she does, i just wish it to be on a larger scale than as senator. a final note i must add is that this has opened my eyes to the amount of socially accepted sexism alive and well in this "democratic" society, i'm not a bra burning, tennis shoes and power suit kinda girl but i have to be appalled and concerned with what has come to the light in this campaing, and it was my own experiences, not what was or was not reported. HILLARY PLEASE DON'T QUIT, WE NEED A STRONG WOMAN TO HELP HEAL OUR COMPROMISED AND FAIING COUNTRY AND YOU ARE RIGHT ON TIME, GOD BLESS YOU & ALL THAT YOU DO,

This, of course, is a beautiful idea in theory, and in any other election year, when there wasn't so much at stake, I'd be among the first to sign up to help. However...let's remember Ralph Nader and the 2000 outcome....right now, the last thing we need is to split the party--that's a schism that McCain & co. will be able to walk right through and on into the White House. I supported Hillary; I still don't care for Obama but will support him now, too, figuring it's much better for us in the long run.

Yes .The dems have been unfair and biased throughout the treatment of Hillary throughout the whole fiasco of the primaries. They were elected in the 2006 midterm elections based on the promise they would get out of Iraq. They havent done anything . Nancy Pelosi , Howard Dean, John Kerry, and Chris Dodd are a disgrace. They should resign their posts for doing nothing. Hillary should no longer affiliate with them. Its time for a CLINTONIAN PARTY. I say BREAK FROM THE DEMOCRATS IMMEDIATELY!!!

I have been thinking about a third party for a couple of months. While I don't think it will happen in time for the upcoming November presidential election, I do believe the American public has grown tired of their limited choices in important elections. With Obama and McCain as my options in November, I have no candidate I feel compelled to vote for. And its obvious that there are many others out there who feel the same way. While I have NO intentions of ever voting for ANY Republican, I also have no desire to vote for Obama just because the Democratic party has decided he is the one that represents all of us who have been life-long Democrats. Hillary has been trashed this whole time and the Democratic party (and an all-too-eager media) has basically shoved Obama down our throats. Many think that all of us who have supported Hillary are sore losers but I will speak for myself in that matter---I have been disappointed with the Democratic party for a few years now--not just how Clinton has been treated in this campaign. The Democrats have been weak---spineless when it comes to standing up to the Republicans. I hate all that the Republican party stands for (after all, they have given us one of the most dimwitted and disgraceful presidents in the history of the U. S.). However, I will give them credit for one thing. They won't back down---and that is what we, those who oppose their agenda of warmongering, corporate greed and denying health care to all Americans (to name a few of the wonderful attributes that help define their true ideology) must support a party that will PUSH back. Its apparent that the Democratic party is NO LONGER that kind of party. For months, Obama's mantra has been change, change, CHANGE! Want a true change, give us a REAL choice, a third party!

If you want Hillary to run for independent then you should probably say goodbye to a democratic president this year, because democratic voters will be split, and McCain will end up winning. This happened in the past when Teddy Roosevelt ran in the progressive party, Taft ran republican and Wilson ran democratic in 1912.

Do we want the past to repeat itself?

I love the idea, count me in!

I support Hillary anyway she decides to go. either Independant or as VP, both have their advantages. As Independant, she has what it takes to be the best of both parties. And should she become VP, she would have the chance to show all what she's made and win the hearts of more voters on the next go round. and yes now with her out of the race, voters are split, so now we just have to pay more attention with up coming debates, and the politcal stands that the other canidates make. Honestly, both McCain, and Obama scare me with their views on one thing or another. So i guess if i want my vote to count, I need to watch and listen carefully in these months to come, and Pray that American voters know what they are doing. As for Hillary, whatever the decision, she has my vote.

Anonymous said...

I totally agree, our country has been hijacked from us and it's time to take it back. To do this, more people would need to take an active interest in politics. Currently, about 60 percent of Americans don't even vote! We also need real news that tells it like it is and doesn't run b.s. stories to distract us from the real issues. I reccommend BBC world news.

Of course, she can, please do it. We definitely need her.

A third party to over-rule or do away with the two parties...? It's an absolute MUST if America is to keep on being an America with which we can actually live and be somewhat happy with!

I say we right in Hillary's name if Obama wont pick her as a vise president!ITs only way he get my vote if he asked her to run with him.

Anonymous said...

I'm glad to hear about this option. I was wondering weeks ago about writing in Hillary's name on the ballot or getting her to run as an independent. It would be wonderful to have her as Obama's running mate. I think that would do more for "unifying" the party. If she's not Obama's choice for VP then I won't vote this election. I have no faith in either of the nominees!

I do not think that Hillary should give up on the Democratic PArty just yet. I think she should get together with Michigan and Florida and sue the Democratic Party. They should challenge the legality of the Democratic's Party rule that only certain primaries can happen before a certain date. The reason is that people were denied access to having their votes count. I would imagine that that is a violation of the US Constitution and its amendments related to voting.

Just a thought...

I agree so much with the sentiments in this position, I fear that an overwhelming amount of bad press could be generated in regards to the fact that 'hillary' 'a woman' someone who 'didn't get their way' was being 'stubborn' and to have hillary as a major force behind this in the beginning could incur too much bad press. The cards would have to be played right, but if they are played right I would like to see something like this come to fruition; especially from such a capable person.

Hillary,

You absolutely have to run as a Third Party ticket. I am NOT going to vote for a candidate that doesn't even have the popular vote. If you have the campaign funds...Go for it!

17-18 million voters have backed you, and We believe in you. I WILL NOT VOTE for a Republican, and I abhor the thought of voting for a person who has ties to Hamas and other Terroristic type organizations.

I'm a veteran, a 2nd generation American, I'm an educated woman (M.A. in paralegal studies), and I haven't missed voting at an election since becoming legally able to do so.

The shame is that the Democratic Super Delegates have disenfranchised the popular vote and that isn't what our founding Fathers intended for...I'm certain that checks and balances are supossed to have eliminated this problem. Therefore, I support you on your Independent Ticket, and also would likke to know how to research what the Super Delegates of my State chose as their vote...so I can make certain NOT to re-elect them as a incumbent next go around.

Also, my Husband says that his Union, local 684 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers' supports you on your proposed Independent ticket as well.

Best of Luck to you and the campaign for 2008! I've said my schpeel, so lets win the election.

Regards...

Funny you should mention this, because I JUST went to the post office to pick up a voter registration form with the intention of changing my party affiliation. I no longer care if being in a smaller, lesser party "wastes" my vote, it's about being true to myself and being a part of something that represents me as a person, and my beliefs. The DNC has dissapointed the heck out of me. I only joined them initially because I wanted my vote to count when I voted for Bill Clinton the first time. I stayed with the Dems through everything since then...until now. They make me sick. If they won't support my candidate, I won't support them. And I sure as Hades will NEVER vote for a republican...the very thought makes my skin crawl.

As for the idea of another party, as long as we have the electorial college and crooked delegates and superdelegates, I can't see how we can make that party even acknowledged, but hey...I would be all for it if we can make it work!

Until then, I'm looking at either Green, or Peace and Freedom which was my very first party I belonged to.

Insult to a Citizen and to Hillary From RFK Jr.....

I got this wonderfully (not) nice message about Hillary Clinton From RFK Jr Today you should read it. It is from his myspace profile.

It's so insulting for a politician with hopes of a political career. I honestly don't think he wrote this and I am forwarding it to the DNC, Obama Campaign, and his website. But, it's one thing for a citizen like me to voice my views but to be attacked by a representative of a political party. This is a great example as to why we need another party.

Vote for any canidate from another party that may be on the ticket if you aren't going to support Obama. This will help send a message that America wants another party.

----------------- Original Message -----------------
From: RFK Jr. 2008
Date: Jun 5, 2008 2:12 PM

It spelled "Independent" by the way,
not "Independant" like you so ignorantly spelled it on the Hillary Clinton page genius.
As to her running as an Independent,
Not going to happen.
Apparently you've never heard of The Election of 1912. Maybe you should look into it before
advising Hillary Clinton to run as an Independent.
Hillary's remaining supporters aren't too bright.
Also, Senator Obama's not putting her on the ticket with him. That's a laughable notion.
The smart money is on Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius. Good riddance to The Clintons.
They were and are the worst thing to ever happen to The Democratic Party. Need proof of that? Just check out the congressional losses by Democrats in 1994 which allowed The Republicans to basically control both houses of Congress from January 1995 until January 2007, except for a short time when the Senate swung back to Democratic control because former Republican Jim Jeffords of VERMONT
left The Republican Party. Hillary is an amazing woman ? Not really. If so, well then your standards are too low. Need a hero ? Try the recently retired Jim Jeffords. You like most Hillary Clinton supporters, especially in your naive age bracket, don't know what you are talking about, but then again, why would you ? You were three or four years old when Clinton became President, dropped the ball on Health Care (actually it was Hillary who dropped it while Bill was frittering away all of his political goodwill on the "gays in the military" non-issue), the congressional losses of 1994, etc.
I won't even go into his second term sex scandal woes which while he survived them ultimately, were of no help to anybody else in Democratic races, and certainly, on some level, contributed to Gore's eventual "defeat" in 2000. And really, the only reason Bill Clinton ever was elected President in 1992 and in 1996 was because he was running in a three-way race each time with Ross Perot playing the spoiler role each time, spoiler role, if you are a Republican anyhow. You really don't know anything about politics. Perhaps you should learn.
Hillary Clinton is not an impressive figure.
Her "RFK" remark was the straw that broke the camel's back. Totally classless and unparalleled in US political history. Sure, sometimes candidates or potential candidates have spoken themselves about possible dangers on the campaign trail but NEVER has a rival candidate invoked the looming specter of those dangers, ESPECIALLY since 1963 and even more so after 1968, but guess what ? Hillary Clinton invoked that specter which haunts the American soul. Give it up. Senator Hillary Clinton lost, and deservedly so, despite every institutional advantage that she had from the outset. You probably feel pretty stupid after reading this right ? Well you should. You should probably just vote for McCain. You fall into his demographic profile.

I did forward the message to the Hillary Clinton Campaign

I completely support Hillary as an Independent candidate! I have been hoping that would be the path she would take. I think that the VP for her wouldn't be good enough. I can understand why she would pursue it, but at the same time, I think she has the ability to go all the way to President on her own!!! VOTE HILLARY!

I think it is a spectacular idea and I've been thinking the time is ripe for a third party as well.
Technology in the form of the internet has made organization of a third party a real possibility and both parties, Republican and Democrat, have become less and less responsive to any but a few power players.
The Democratic Party completely lost me when they gave delegates to a candidate who wasn't on the ballot. Useless

I really wish Hillary would chose to run independent, I am having a hard time excepting that she will not be running. We as a country need her so badly right now and I just can't understand with the shape our economy is in that America would want to take a chance on some one we know nothing about instead of some one with a proven past.... Just makes no sence!

what ever Senator Hillary decide to do I will support her 100%.

Anonymous said...

I agree 100%. A third party would let the Democrates and Republicans know the people want our country back. Hillary would be the perfect person to start this party. We have got to unite and do something or things are just going to get worse.

Anonymous said...

I agree. The two party system does not serve the people, it only serves the two parties. It is outdated and should be abolished. Rather than a "third" party, I'd love to see NO parties; candidates would simply run on their own platforms and there would be no party warfare and manipulations. Unfortunately, this country is not likely to move in this direction fo many years. It will take longer for enough people to get fed up with things for this change to take place. It is the best hope for the future but I don't think people are ready for the future. I wish they were. Hillary could take the great risk this year but she would be subject to even more trashing and bashing. I know she's strong but I wouldn't want her to have to endure it. It's been painful enough these past months.

STILL FOR HILL!

Anonymous said...

I think that is a sensational idea! I am all for it! Being an ethnic, gay, woman I understand and embrace the level of change that will be needed to run this country.

Hillary is the ideal candidate to begin a new era in politics in the US...a much needed change.

I do understand supporters urge to restore the strength of the Democratic party and unify under the DNC's chosen candidate I cannot disqualify my own feelings and beliefs, nor do I accept defeat or pressure to support a candidate that does not represent my hopes and dreams for myself, my children, and all collective peoples that call this great country home.

No one should feel pressured into supporting a candidate for fear of a lesser option.

At this point I would find it an insult to have to sit uner either of these men.

The country spoke loud and clear. The two parties should begin listening, and since they don't seem to keen on that, as they say competition is only healthy.

I like all of you would like to see a definite chance and for me Obama or McCain do not satisfy the hunger that this country has been fighting for since it's Independence.

Viva Hillary!

I was so pleased to stumble upon this today. After the Rules Committee vote late week I told my oldest daughter I felt Hillary should cut her losses ad go independent. There has never been a stronger candidate for a third party run. No party is sacred and our two party system has become so corrupt that undermining
the vote is becoming commonplace.

I am an African American woman who is furious that the media has bullied this woman out of this race. But they were aided and abetted by the DNC's arcane rules and Obama's backroom maneuverings. So much for the "change candidate". So much for the DNC hype about the importance of voting. We need other parties that will ensure election reform and not just give lip service. Also another party will break the deadlocks in Washington.

Count me in. I just posted about this on the main PUMA site - (where am I now?)

But there is power in numbers. There are 18 million of us and we are spread all over the internet - we have to join together.

And I belong to two other groups who are ready willing and able to work towards the same goal. A new party: the New Democratic Party, The Real Democratic Party, The Populists, The PUMAS, - I dont care what you call it, but we have 18 million people out here who have been cheated out of their vote and are being hammered to vote for the big Zero or else MCain will get in.

Well that's too bad. The DNC and the Super Delegates should have thought about cheating us of our vote and stealing the election from Hillary before they did it.

I will not vote for the Zero.

I will not vote for the rethuglicans.

Furthermore I will not vote down the Dem line either. That shoud get their attention.

The only way I will vote for anything with the Zero's name on it is if Hillary Rodham Clinton's name is on the ticket.

Meantime I would still work for a new third party because although I've worked for Democratic candidates for more than 30 years, I'm through with them.

Although I doubt that Hillary would leave the Dem party, there are other names who might help us. We could try asking Robert F. Kennedy Jr. -he has been for Hillary and is a very decent and honorable man who has worked for years cleaning up the environment. Asking wouldnt hurt. And there are others who are decent and have name recognition.

Building a new party takes time, but if we dont start
it'll never happen

And now is the time.

Dem Party Unity My Ass !!

K.
