Hillary the E-Diplomat
Her videos aren't quite viral yet and she's not tweeting, but Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is embracing new media, using the Web to promote the agency and her role as the nation's top envoy. In less than three months, Clinton's State Department has embarked on a digital diplomacy drive aimed at spreading the word about American foreign policy and restoring Washington's image. Part of a broader Internet outreach by President Barack Obama's administration, Clinton's Web efforts already have outpaced those of her predecessors. (read more AP)

NoLimits.org Updates: WOMEN'S HEALTH ALERT & VITAL VOICES
Just 17 days to speak up about that last minute Bush regulation which adds more barriers to reproductive health care. This rule, in the name of "conscience" would allow health care providers not just to deny access to care of which they disapprove -such as emergency contraception to victims of sexual assault - but also refuse to give patients referrals or information on how they could get such care.
The Obama administration has proposed to repeal this anti-science, anti-women, anti-family rule, and now they want to hear what we think. Until April 9, they are asking for comments, including: "Information, including specific examples where feasible, supporting or refuting allegations that the December 19, 2008 final rule reduces access to information and health care services, particularly by low-income women; and comment on whether the objectives of the December 19, 2008 final rule might also be accomplished through non-regulatory means, such as outreach and education."
If you want to add your comment, click here to e-mail directly to HHS.
VITAL VOICES
A moving ceremony by Vital Voices in Washington this past week honored women leaders from around the world. Their powerful stories of courage and determination remind us of the difference that one individual can make - in our lives and on behalf of others:
Somaly Mam escaped from a brothel herself and now works to rescue other women and girls from sexual slavery, and provides them education and job training;
Sadiqa Basiri Saleem, of Afghanistan, founded the Oruj Learning Center providing education for more than 2,700 girls and 200 women.
Temituokpe Esisi, of Nigeria, started her own successful fashion company, using the skills she learned in business education, and now employs others;
Chouchou Namegebe Nabintu and Marceline Kongolo-Rice of the Democratic Republic of Congo, spoke movingly of the terrible situation in their country, where rape is being used as an instrument of war.
Vital Voices was first launched in 1997 by then First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, an example of her lifelong commitment to recognizing the human rights of women, and working to ensure opportunities for women and girls. After eight years of serving as Honorary Co-Chair of Vital Voices, Hillary stepped down to become Secretary of State. How appropriate that she was honored on this occasion with the Global Trailblazer Award!

NoLimits.org Updates: COULD CONGRESS VOTE ON HEALTH CARE THIS FALL?
"More than three-quarters of adult Americans who have health insurance say they still worry about paying more for their medical care, and almost 50 percent say they're "very" or "extremely" worried about the issue."
Harris Interactive/Health Day poll, reported by USNews March 18, 2009
The bottom line on health care is clear - and it's not pretty: the cost of health insurance has doubled since 2000, leaving more Americans to join the uninsured; while even those with health insurance worry about costs and coverage. Rising health care costs endanger our families' wellbeing; burden state budgets; and make it even harder for American manufacturers to compete.
That's why it's good news that we are starting to hear about a vote on health care as early as this fall. According to the Washington Post, House Democrats, in consultation with the White House, "will give Republicans until September to reach a compromise" on a health care reform bill.
The House leadership plans to include health care reform in their budget proposal, or budget reconciliation. According to congressional rules that means it requires a majority vote, but cannot be filibustered. The Senate will probably use a different procedure; whatever they decide, the goal of this strategy is to ensure that health care reform does get a vote this year.
So watch for the discussion of health care in the budget next week (and beyond!) And if you hear some talking heads on television complain that putting health care reform in the - budget reconciliation is somehow unfair - remind them that it will still require a majority vote. Isn't that what democracy is about?

Hillary Pushing Forward Without Full Staff
Hillary Clinton faces several more months without a full roster of staff as the State Department pushes ahead with an ambitious overhaul of U.S. foreign policy, including stepping up engagement with longtime adversaries such as Iran, Syria and Russia.
For the moment, Secretary of State Clinton is relying on special advisers, as well as lower-ranking career officials who don't require Senate confirmation. (more at WSJ)

Hillary Clinton Most Important First Lady
By Paul Bedard, Washington Whispers
It pays to stay in the public eye, especially if you are Hillary Clinton. President Obama's secretary of state, a controversial first lady who went on to become an effective U.S. senator, tops our Whispers poll for the most important first lady since the 1980s. By more than 2 to 1, Clinton beat another headline-gathering first lady, Nancy Reagan, and the two Bushes barely made a blip on the poll conducted March 9-11 by Synovate eNation among 1,000 nationally representative households. Barbara Bush, who recently underwent heart surgery, was last among the four, but recall that she had only one term to prove herself, while the others had two four-year presidential terms.
The Whispers Poll
Michelle Obama's effort to revive the morale of the federal workforce with her listening tour has renewed attention to the jobs and influence of first ladies. Which of the most recent presidential wives do you think affected the nation most?
Hillary Clinton 56%
Nancy Reagan 25%
Laura Bush 10%
Barbara Bush 9%

Crisis Averted in Pakistan
WASHINGTON, March 16 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told Pakistan's president and opposition leader over the weekend U.S. aid could be at risk unless they defused a crisis over a top judge, U.S. officials said on Monday.
In a surprise move, Pakistan's government announced on Monday it would reinstate Iftikhar Chaudhry as chief justice, aiming to defuse a crisis and end protests by lawyers and activists that threatened to turn violent.
The officials said Clinton telephoned on Saturday both President Asif Ali Zardari and his rival, former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who had backed the anti-government lawyers.
The officials said Clinton, who coordinated with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, had exerted strong pressure for a deal. (read more at Reuters)

Meghan McCain & The Republican Youth
The youth of today are educated, aware, value people's ability to make their own life choices, with a global perspective on life. They are less likely to discriminate and they honor equality.
This has put many young republicans in odd situations. One being Meghan McCain who doesn't completely agree with the old ideals of the party. She supports gay rights, stem cell research, fighting to stop global warming and recently spoke out against Ann Coulter for her extreme views.
Meghan on Rachel Maddow
So what does Meghan get for speaking out about what's wrong with the Republican Party? She gets criticized for being overweight by Republicans. (link)
I personally hope that Meghan is successful in her campaign to speak out against the more extreme conservatism and people like Ann Coulter & Rush Limbaugh. Pundits like Ann Coulter don't help the conversation, they only help drive a divide between people.

Secretary Clinton to Travel to Mexico
"U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will visit Mexico on March 25-26, the State Department said on Friday, amid growing concerns in the United States about drug-related violence in its southern neighbor." (Reuters)With 7,000 drug cartel related deaths in the last year along the border, I am happy to hear that Secretary Hillary Clinton will be visiting Mexico. The US needs to take a more active approach working with Mexico to help stop the growing drug cartel problem.

Hillary Announces Million-Dollar Scholarship Program for Palestinian Students
Here is an interview Hillary did on a teen Palestinian show (link)Mrs. Clinton announced the Middle East Partnership Initiative during a visit to this Palestinian town last week. The four-year program will support about 10 scholarships each year for disadvantaged students to attend four-year courses at Palestinian universities. The program will also offer 25 “opportunity grants” to enable promising but disadvantaged young Palestinians to apply to American-accredited institutions in the United States or the Middle East, a State Department official told The Chronicle.
Once funds are approved by Congress, Mrs. Clinton hopes to begin the program in the 2010-11 academic year. The money is in addition to $900-million in aid to the Palestinian Authority announced by the secretary last week at the donors’ conference, in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt.

Huge Push Forward For Education
The Gates Foundation released their statement of support shortly afterwards
Take a moment and Tweet this post or repost on your blog."President Obama today continued to advance the urgent demand to improve America’s public education system from the earliest ages through high school and the completion of a college degree or certificate.
We join our grantees and students across the country in this important endeavor, including the need for fewer, clearer, and higher standards; pay that rewards effective teachers; data systems that track student achievement; and increasing financial aid that rewards postsecondary completion--not simply access.
As the president recognizes, the global economy demands that we not only address high school dropout rates, but do more to ensure that students go on to complete a postsecondary degree or credential with real value in the job market. Low-income and minority students, in particular, suffer from a lack of access to a high-quality education. Only one in five Hispanic young people graduate high school ready for college, and only a quarter of low-income students earn a degree or credential after high school. Today’s speech recognizes education reform as both a civil rights and an economic security priority for everyone in this country.
We are committed to working with the president and his administration, members of Congress, governors, and other bold leaders across America who are making it a top priority to ensure that all young people graduate prepared for college and career success."Find out more about the foundation’s education work in the United States.

Hillary Mends US/Turkey Relations
Combining statecraft with stagecraft, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appears to have turned around US-Turkish relations. For much of the Bush administration, Washington had a strained relationship with Ankara, but Clinton’s first visit to Turkey as President Barack Obama’s secretary of state had Turkish officials feeling more optimistic about the future of bilateral relations."Her coming to Turkey is [like the] pressing of the reset button and starting with a clean slate. Turkey is ready for that. The last eight years have been troublesome," says Suat Kiniklioglu, a member of parliament and Deputy Chairman of External Affairs for Turkey’s governing Justice and Development Party (AKP). Hillary's Statement from International Women's Day
From Sunday
International Women's Day
On the occasion of International Women’s Day 2009, I am proud to honor women around the world who are blazing trails and surmounting obstacles in pursuit of equality and opportunity. Although you may not know their names or recognize their faces, these women advocates are hard at work in every country and on every continent, seeking to fulfill their right to participate fully in the political, economic and cultural lives of their societies. Often working against great odds and at great personal sacrifice, they are a key to global progress in this new century and deserve our admiration and support.
Put simply, we have much less hope of addressing the complex challenges we face in this new century without the full participation of women. Whether the economic crisis, the spread of terrorism, regional conflicts that threaten families and communities, and climate change and the dangers it presents to the world’s health and security, we will not solve these challenges through half measures. Yet too often, on these issues and many more, half the world is left behind.
This is not simply a matter of emotion or altruism. A growing body of research tells us that supporting women is a high-yield investment, resulting in stronger economies, more vibrant civil societies, healthier communities, and greater peace and stability. But even so, no nation in the world has yet achieved full equality for women.
Women still comprise the majority of the world’s poor, unfed, and unschooled. Hundreds of thousands of women die in childbirth every year. They are subjected to rape as a tactic of war and exploited by traffickers globally in a billion dollar criminal business. Laws are still on the books denying women the right to own property, access credit, or make their own choices within their marriage. And honor killings, maiming, female genital mutilation, and other violent and degrading practices that target women are tolerated in too many places today.
Like all people, women deserve to live free from violence and fear. To create peaceful, thriving communities, women must be equal partners. That means making key resources available to women as well as men, including the chance to work for fair wages and have access to credit; to vote, petition their governments and run for office; to know they can get healthcare when they need it, including family planning; and to send their children to school—their sons and their daughters.
Women also have a crucial role to play in establishing peace worldwide. In regions torn apart by war, it is often the women who find ways to reach across differences and discover common ground as mothers, caretakers, and grassroots advocates. One need only look to Northern Ireland, Rwanda, the Balkans, and parts of Central America to see the impact of women working in their communities to bridge divides in areas of sectarian conflict.
This week, as we celebrate the accomplishments and the untapped potential of women around the world, we must remind ourselves that ensuring the rights of women and girls is not only a matter of justice. It is a matter of enhancing global peace, progress, and prosperity for generations to come.
When women are afforded their basic rights, they flourish. And so do their children, families, communities, and nations.

Hillary Impresses Young Europeans
According to the reports Hillary absolutely amazed and impressed the young Europeans
Clinton was received rapturously. She glad-handed her audience at the vast European parliament. People cheered. She waved. They clapped, they craned their necks for a better glimpse, and they gave her a standing ovation.
"Europe is a miracle," Clinton told around 1,000 young high-fliers. "A complex compromise of different interests." ...
The lad in the "I Love Hillary" T-shirt, a gay rights activist from Moldova, extracted a ringing endorsement of his campaign.
"Human rights are the inalienable right of every person no matter who that person loves," Clinton said, adding that attacks on gays and lesbians were not only occurring on a worrying scale, but were being "condoned and protected".
"That was great," crowed the German parliament president, Hans-Gert Pöttering, unable to conceal his delight at hosting the highest-profile American in his parliament since Ronald Reagan visited Strasbourg 24 years ago. He prompted mild guffaws by boasting that the European chamber was "a real and growing power".(buzzle)
---------------------
Clinton’s performance was brilliantly executed in that she pitched her message at exactly the level the European audience wanted. They wanted to hear an American talk like a European, and that’s what they got.
Of course, her best line came at the start when she called Europe a “miracle” because of the way it had overcome two world wars and a century of fanaticism and put itself on the path of peaceful, prosperous integration. “Europe is enjoying its longest period of peace since Roman times,” she said, displaying a grasp of 2,000 years of history that is just the kind of thing Europeans think the average American doesn’t have a clue about.
