Secretary Clinton's Trip to Indonesia Proof That Modernity and Islam Can Coexist
JAKARTA (Reuters) – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held up Indonesia on Wednesday as proof that modernity and Islam can coexist as she visited the country where U.S. President Barack Obama spent four years as a boy.
Clinton's 24-hour stay in the world's most populous Muslim nation underlined Obama's desire to forge a better relationship with the Islamic world, where his predecessor George W. Bush's policies were deeply unpopular, notably the invasion of Iraq.
Clinton, on her first trip as secretary of state, said she wanted to deepen cooperation between the two countries on counterterrorism, climate change and security.
"As I travel around the world over the next years, I will be saying to people: if you want to know whether Islam, democracy, modernity and women's rights can co-exist, go to Indonesia," she said at a dinner with civil society activists. (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pledged to reduce the government's use of private security contractors abroad, in comments Wednesday.
Clinton said a review of the firms' role was being carried out following a series of scandals over the conduct of contractors like Blackwater, barred from Iraq for its role in a 2007 Baghdad shooting involving its guards, in which 17 civilians were killed.
"I certainly am of the mind that we should, insofar as possible, diminish our reliance on private security contractors", Clinton said during a gathering at the State Department. (read more here)

Clinton demands Hamas stop rocket fire
From CNN
But, Clinton noted, "There were rockets yesterday, there were rockets this morning. It is difficult to ask any nation to do anything other than defend itself in the wake of that kind of consistent attack."
Although she will send special Mideast envoy George Mitchell back to the region, she emphasized that "our conditions with respect to Hamas have not and will not change."
Following the policy set out by the Bush administration and international community, Clinton said the United States will not talk to Hamas until it renounces violence, recognizes Israel and abides by previous agreements signed by Israel and the Palestinians.

Welcome The First African American Attorney General
"WASHINGTON – Eric Holder won Senate confirmation Monday as the nation's first African-American attorney general, after supporters from both parties touted his dream resume and easily overcame Republican concerns over his commitment to fight terrorism and his unwillingness to back the right to keep and bear arms.
The vote was 75-21, with all the opposition coming from Republicans.
Holder's chief supporter, Sen. Patrick Leahy, said the confirmation was a fulfillment of civil rights leader Martin Luther King's dream that everyone would be judged by the content of their character.
"Come on the right side of history," said Leahy, D-Vt., chairman of the Judiciary Committee.
Holder becomes the only black in the Obama administration in what has traditionally been known as the president's Cabinet. Three other African-Americans have been chosen for top administration positions that hold the same rank." -Associated Press
Holder's confirmation is a step in the right direction for the country. We are continuning to see day by day the pieces fall into place as this administration begins to take shape. This has been a great day for America. (from AP)

Daschle's Tax Mistake
WASHINGTON – "Senators awaited guidance from the committee reviewing Tom Daschle's nomination to be health secretary before deciding whether the former majority leader's big tax mistake might trip him up." (AP) But, despite the oversight Daschle has received praise from Democrats on the hill as a respected figure in Washington. Daschle did make some mistakes but, at least he is owning up to his own shortcomings and in a special Senate Finance Committee meeting scheduled for Monday the Senate will then act based upon their recommendations. Although, mistakes were made we all are human and if you really look at the situation he is the right man for the job. I believe he will be confirmed. But, we will have to wait and see...
