Education News

Kanye West & Education by Marc Lampkin
(from the Huffington Post)
Last weekend I had the surreal experience of sitting next to mega-rapper Kanye West at a press conference and realizing that we were pretty alike: we both feel strongly about George W. Bush, we both look good in Polo shirts, and most importantly, we’re both concerned black men who are trying to get something done about America’s education crisis.

ED in ’08 recently partnered with The Kanye West Foundation , and I was in Chicago to visit the set of a PSA that Kanye is filming for ED in ’08, challenging the presidential candidates to speak up about education. He’s eager to use his celebrity and platform to bring attention to this issue – we agree that the candidates from both parties aren’t doing enough to show that K-12 education reform is something that they care about. ED IN ’08 TO NEA: “DON’T SQUELCH THE DEBATE”
From the Huffington Post

Digg This - (Take a Moment and Digg this Article)
NEA: Don't Squelch the Debate!
I thought America was all about encouraging vigorous debate on important issues, but I guess not everyone agrees.

At the ABC News presidential debate in Iowa on Sunday morning, wefinally began to see what a real debate on education might look like, the kind of debate we've been calling for here at ED in '08.George Stephanopoulos and David Yepsen asked the Democrats where theystand on performance pay for teachers. It was by far the most seriousand substantive education question to date, and it provoked nearly nineminutes of good discussion about how to improve schools.

Just as important, it highlighted some real differences among thecandidates on an important issue. That's a big, positive step forwardin a primary season during which serious education debate has beenvirtually non-existent. Americans need to start seeing how candidatesdiffer on critical but politically difficult issues. How else can theymake informed decisions about how to vote?

But instead of celebrating the dawn of a true education debate, some groups want to end it. Read More

Hillary's Plan for Home Ownership & Youth Opportunity Agenda

Hillary Clinton Announces Plan to Address Mortgage Lending Abuses; Preserve Dream of Home Ownership

DERRY, NH - With foreclosure rates continuing to skyrocket across the country, Senator Hillary Clinton in Derry, NH today laid out a plan to preserve the American dream of home ownership that would crack down on unscrupulous brokers, curb mortgage lending abuses, assist families facing foreclosure and expand affordable housing options. Hillary Clinton's Youth Opportunity Agenda

Today, Hillary Clinton announced a Youth Opportunity Agenda to address the silent crisis of disconnected youth in America. Hillary's 35 years of experience fighting for children and families has taught her that every young person in America has potential. Yet today we are failing to realize that potential. More than four million of our young people between 16 to 24 are out of school and out of work. The number of these disconnected youth has grown an alarming 18% between 2000 and 2005. The situation of the 1.4 million young African American and Hispanic men who are out-of-work and out-of-school today is particularly troubling. These young men are less likely to graduate high school, more likely to end up in prison and are often left jobless and poor. Read More

Latest News - Hillary Gains Respect At Bloggers Gathering
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton faced a convention Saturday of 1,400 politically influential online activists who don't particularly like her. Yet she emerged from the presidential forum here at the Yearly Kos convention with a little more respect - if not love - from the liberal bloggers.

It helps that the first thing Clinton did was thank them. In a meeting with about 350 activists before a debate with six other Democratic challengers, Clinton praised the bloggers for helping to create a "modern progressive movement" and for standing up "against a right-wing noise machine."

"I only wish we had this active and fighting a blogosphere 15 years ago," when her husband, Bill, was president, Clinton said. She got a laugh by joking that a faulty microphone was the work of "a vast right-wing conspiracy."

Join EDin08 - Make Education Matter in 2008

Strong American Schools is a nonpartisan public awareness and action campaign offering a voice to every American who supports “ED in 08.” Our goal is to ensure that the nation engages in a rigorous debate and to make education a top priority in the 2008 presidential election. We hope that candidates will offer genuine leadership rather than empty rhetoric and tell voters how they intend to strengthen America’s schools so all students receive the education they deserve.
